Dropped kerbs
And vehicle crossover applications
A dropped kerb (or vehicle crossover) application is a form of permission from your local authority allowing you to construct a lawful driveway and dropped kerb access, outside the boundary of your property. The process includes determining a solution that meets highway requirements for safety (though it’s important to note that this isn’t always possible!).
Each local authority publishes its own guidance and criteria for applications, which will need to include drawings and specifications. Some projects and local authorities will also require planning permission, which we can also advise you on.
Complications for dropped kerb applications can include:
- Minimum dimension for parking (and soft landscaping), planning permission, conservation areas, listed buildings, and Article 4 directions
- Drainage
- Classified roads
- Street furniture (such as lamp posts, bus stops, or service boxes)
- Grass verges
- Parking bays
- Proximity to junctions
- Red routes
- Tree preservation orders, and trees in general
The process
- A feasibility review, to confirm the viability of the project against your local authorities’ requirements
- An application to gain formal approval
- Following approval, construction of your driveway area
- Construction of the dropped kerb, by an approved contractor (approved by your local authority)
How we can help
- Desktop review – we can complete an initial desktop review to establish whether a dropped kerb might be feasible at your property, reviewing against your local authority requirements, and saving you time and money on a site visit if there are prohibitive challenges identified.
- Survey – we identify the exact levels, dimensions of your property, along with any potential complications. If we’ve completed a separate measured survey for you and you have since decided you would like a dropped kerb, we’ll already have this information from the earlier survey.
- Design compliance – we can review your local authority requirements and (if possible) provide a compliant solution to achieve your goals. Once agreed, we’ll compile the application documents, and submit the application on your behalf.
- Application support – we’ll liaise with the local authority directly.
- Construction support – following your approval to proceed, we can guide you through the next steps.
